DIY Natural Toothpaste with Bentonite Clay

When it comes to everyday wellness, sometimes the simplest swaps can make the biggest difference. One of those swaps is toothpaste. Instead of reaching for a tube filled with artificial foaming agents, sweeteners, and preservatives, you can make your own natural version at home — and the star ingredient is bentonite clay.

This mineral-rich clay has been used for centuries for its cleansing and detoxifying properties. It binds to toxins, gently polishes the teeth, and helps support a healthy mouth environment — all without the harsh chemicals.

Below are two easy recipes you can try at home:

🌿 Bentonite Clay Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp food-grade bentonite clay

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (softened)

  • 1–2 tbsp filtered water (adjust for texture)

  • 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda (optional, for gentle whitening)

  • 1 tsp xylitol (optional, for natural sweetness and dental support)

  • 5–8 drops peppermint essential oil (freshness)

  • 1–2 drops clove essential oil (optional, gum support)

Method:

  1. In a non-metal bowl, combine the clay and bicarbonate of soda.

  2. Add coconut oil and a little water, stirring with a wooden or plastic spoon until smooth.

  3. Mix in xylitol (if using) and essential oils.

  4. Adjust with extra clay or water until you reach a smooth paste.

  5. Store in a small glass jar with lid.

How to Use:Scoop a pea-sized amount with a clean spoon or spatula (avoid dipping your toothbrush directly). Brush as usual, then rinse well.

🌿 Bentonite Clay Tooth Powder

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp food-grade bentonite clay

  • 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda (optional)

  • 1 tbsp calcium carbonate powder (optional, for extra mineral support)

  • 1 tsp xylitol (optional)

  • 5–10 drops peppermint essential oil

  • 1–2 drops clove or cinnamon essential oil (optional)

Method:

  1. In a non-metal bowl, combine all dry powders.

  2. Sprinkle in essential oils and whisk well to distribute evenly.

  3. Store in an airtight glass jar.

How to Use:Wet your toothbrush bristles, dip lightly into the powder, brush as usual, and rinse well.

🌿 Why Choose Homemade?

  • Natural & chemical-free: No artificial foaming agents or preservatives.

  • Customisable: Adjust flavour, sweetness, and texture to suit your preference.

  • Cost-effective: Simple ingredients last a long time.

  • Eco-friendly: Store in glass jars and cut down on plastic tubes.

⚠️ Note: Always use food-grade bentonite clay. Avoid swallowing large amounts, and take care when using essential oils (not suitable for very young children)
