Cleavers (Galium aparine) is a familiar wild herb found throughout Britain, easily recognised by its long scrambling stems and tiny hooked hairs that cling enthusiastically to clothes, animals and pretty much anything else they encounter.

Used in traditional European herbalism for centuries, Cleavers is most commonly prepared as a herbal tea or infusion. Its traditional reputation centres particularly around the lymphatic and urinary systems, although modern clinical research specifically investigating Cleavers in humans remains limited.

Cleavers & Traditional Herbal Use

Cleavers has a long history of use as a springtime herb and was traditionally gathered while young and fresh.

Herbalists have traditionally used Cleavers to:

• Support normal lymphatic function

• Support normal urinary function and fluid elimination

• Complement traditional springtime herbal preparations

• Prepare gentle herbal teas and longer infusions

Cleavers contains a range of naturally occurring plant constituents, including iridoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and tannins.

Laboratory research has investigated several of these compounds and their biological activity. However, there is currently limited high-quality human clinical research demonstrating specific health benefits from drinking Cleavers tea. For that reason, we prefer to distinguish its well-established traditional herbal use from effects that have been scientifically proven in people.

What to Expect in Your Pouch

Cleavers is supplied as the dried aerial parts of the plant, rather than simply the leaves.

Expect a natural mixture of cut leaves and stems in your pouch. Pieces of stalk are completely normal and form part of the herb traditionally used.

As with all minimally processed botanicals, the colour, texture and size of the cut can vary naturally between harvests.

How to Prepare Cleavers Tea

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of dried Cleavers per cup.

Pour over freshly boiled water, cover and leave to infuse for approximately 10–15 minutes.

Strain before drinking.

Cleavers produces a mild, green and slightly grassy infusion. It can be enjoyed by itself or combined with other dried herbs to create your own loose herbal blends.

Other Ways to Use Cleavers

Dried Cleavers can also be used for:

• Longer herbal infusions

• Homemade loose herbal blends

• Traditional botanical preparations

• Homemade tinctures and extracts
