Organic Mugwort

Botanical name: Artemisia vulgaris

Plant family: Asteraceae

Also known as: Common Mugwort

Available sizes: 30g, 50g & 100g

Ingredients: 100% Organic Mugwort

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is an aromatic perennial herb with a long history of use throughout European and Asian herbal traditions. Closely related to wormwood, it has distinctive deeply divided leaves, an earthy herbal aroma and a naturally bitter flavour.

Our Organic Mugwort consists of the naturally dried aerial parts of the plant, so expect a mixture of cut leaves and pieces of stem in your pouch. This is completely normal for minimally processed Mugwort and the colour, texture and cut can vary naturally between harvests.

Mugwort & Traditional Herbal Use

Mugwort has been used in traditional herbalism for centuries, particularly in preparations associated with digestion and women's menstrual health. Its naturally bitter character also led to its traditional use as a digestive herb, particularly before or after food.

Mugwort is perhaps equally famous for its historical association with sleep and dreaming. It has a longstanding place in European folk-herbal traditions surrounding vivid dreams and dream recall. These uses are fascinating from a traditional perspective, but there isn't good clinical evidence showing that drinking Mugwort tea reliably improves sleep or produces vivid or lucid dreams.

What Does the Science Say?

Mugwort contains numerous naturally occurring plant compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic compounds and volatile oils.

Laboratory studies have identified antioxidant, antimicrobial and other biological activities in extracts of Artemisia vulgaris. However, laboratory activity doesn't automatically translate into a proven health benefit from drinking Mugwort tea.

Despite Mugwort's extensive history of traditional use, high-quality human clinical research is currently limited. Claims surrounding menstrual problems, digestion, sleep and dreaming therefore shouldn't be presented as established medical effects.

This is a good example of a herb where the traditional history is substantial, while modern clinical evidence has yet to catch up.

How to Prepare Mugwort Tea

Add approximately 1 teaspoon of dried Mugwort per cup.

Pour over freshly boiled water, cover and allow to infuse for approximately 5–10 minutes before straining.

Mugwort has a distinctive aromatic and naturally bitter flavour. If you're new to it, you may prefer to begin with a smaller amount or combine it with a milder herb.

Other Ways to Use Mugwort

Dried Mugwort can also be used for:

• Loose herbal tea blends

• Traditional botanical preparations

• Homemade tinctures and extracts

• Botanical and craft preparations
