Organic Oat Straw

Botanical name: Avena sativa

Plant family: Poaceae

Available sizes: 30g, 50g & 100g

Ingredients: 100% Organic Oat Straw

Oat Straw comes from the green stems and leaves of the familiar oat plant, Avena sativa. Long used in traditional Western herbalism, it has earned a reputation as a gentle, nourishing herb and is most commonly prepared as a herbal tea or longer-steeped infusion.

Unlike oat grain, Oat Straw is made from the aerial parts of the plant. Your pouch will therefore contain naturally dried and cut pieces of pale green to golden stems and leaves. The appearance and colour can vary from batch to batch — exactly what you would expect from a minimally processed botanical.

Oat Straw & Traditional Herbal Use

Oat Straw has traditionally been used as a nutritive and restorative herb, particularly during periods of tiredness, stress and general depletion. Herbalists have long associated oats with supporting the nervous system, which is why Oat Straw frequently appears in traditional calming and wellbeing blends.

The oat plant naturally contains a range of plant compounds, including flavonoids, saponins and phenolic compounds. Oats also contain a group of compounds known as avenanthramides, which have attracted scientific interest for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

It is important, however, to distinguish research into oats and oat-derived compounds from research specifically into drinking Oat Straw tea. Clinical evidence for many of the traditional claims surrounding Oat Straw remains limited, so we prefer not to present traditional herbal uses as proven medical benefits.

How to Use Oat Straw

Oat Straw has a mild, grassy flavour and can be enjoyed by itself or combined with other dried herbs.

It works particularly well alongside herbs such as nettle leaf, lemon balm, chamomile and rose petals when creating your own loose herbal blends.

How to Make Oat Straw Tea

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of dried Oat Straw per cup.

Pour over freshly boiled water, cover and leave to steep for around 10–15 minutes.

Strain and enjoy.

For a stronger infusion, Oat Straw can also be steeped for considerably longer before straining. Its mild flavour makes it particularly well suited to longer herbal infusions.

A Note About Natural Dried Herbs

Oat Straw is exactly that — the dried stems and leaves of the oat plant. Expect plenty of visible pieces of stalk and leaf in your pouch. These aren't unwanted pieces or filler; they're the parts of the plant traditionally used as Oat Straw.

Because this is a natural agricultural product, the colour, size and cut of the herb can vary slightly between batches.

Important Information

If you have coeliac disease or a sensitivity to gluten, check the suitability of Oat Straw before use. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but cross-contamination with gluten-containing cereals can occur during growing, harvesting or processing unless the product is specifically certified gluten-free.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have an existing medical condition, seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before regularly using herbal products.

Herbs should not be used as a replacement for prescribed medication or professional medical advice.

Available in 30g, 50g and 100g pouches.
