Organic Red Clover

Botanical name: Trifolium pratense

Plant family: Fabaceae

Available sizes: 30g, 50g & 100g

Ingredients: 100% Organic Red Clover

Red Clover is a familiar meadow plant with a surprisingly interesting herbal history. Native to Europe and parts of Asia and North Africa, Trifolium pratense has been used traditionally for generations and has more recently attracted scientific interest because of its naturally occurring isoflavones — plant compounds with a structure similar to oestrogen.

Our organic Red Clover is a naturally dried, minimally processed herb.

Please expect a mixture of flower heads, petals, leaves and pieces of stem in your pouch.

This is normal for a whole dried botanical and reflects the natural harvested plant rather than a highly processed or sifted product.

Red Clover & Women’s Health

Red Clover is particularly well known for its use during perimenopause and menopause because it contains the isoflavones biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein. These compounds are classed as phytoestrogens.

Red Clover is one of the herbs that has actually been studied in human clinical trials. Research has concentrated particularly on menopausal hot flushes. Results across studies have varied, although systematic reviews and clinical trials have reported reductions in hot-flush frequency in some women taking Red Clover isoflavones.

Research has also investigated Red Clover in relation to cardiovascular and bone health. Some studies in peri- and post-menopausal women have found improvements in aspects of the blood lipid profile, including total cholesterol, although the overall evidence is not sufficiently consistent to regard Red Clover as a treatment for high cholesterol.

Studies investigating bone density have produced mixed results and further research is needed.

For this reason, we prefer to describe Red Clover for what it is: a traditional herb containing naturally occurring phytoestrogens that has been the subject of genuine scientific research, particularly in relation to women's health and menopause — but not a substitute for medical treatment.

How to Use Red Clover

Red Clover can be prepared as a simple herbal infusion or combined with other herbs.

To make Red Clover tea:

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of dried Red Clover to a cup or teapot.

Pour over freshly boiled water and cover.

Allow to steep for approximately 10–15 minutes, then strain.

Enjoy as it is, or add a little honey or lemon if preferred.

For a stronger herbal infusion, use a little more herb and allow it to steep for longer before straining.

Red Clover can also be combined beautifully with herbs such as nettle leaf, raspberry leaf, lemon balm or rose petals to create your own loose herbal blends.

A Note About Natural Dried Herbs

This is a natural agricultural product, so colour, cut and appearance can vary slightly from batch to batch. Red Clover is not simply dried flower heads: leaves and stems are a normal part of the dried herb and should be expected.
